PRIME MINISTER LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR NEW CEMENT FACTORY IN FIGUIL

The foundation stone for a new cement plant has been laid in Figuil, Mayo Louti division, Cameroon's North region.

The factory, according to Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, who represented the President of the Republic during the event, is in accordance with the government's import substitution strategy, which aims to valorize Cameroon's natural resources.

During a high-level event attended by administrative officials and the elite of the North area, the Head of Government laid the groundwork for a new plant to manufacture cement and clinker.

Cemencam's new cement manufacturing line will cost an estimated CFAF 50 billion to build and will boost national cement production capacity by 500,000 tonnes per year when completed.

The opening of the new cement plant in Figuil comes at a time when Cameroon imports 80 percent of the raw materials required to manufacture the vital construction ingredient.

A scenario that raises the cost of the thriving building sector. The nation has suffered even greater losses as a result of the COVID19 pandemic's skyrocketing freight transportation expenses.

The new cement and clinker manufacturing plant at Figuil is intended to solve these obstacles.

When finished, it will use Cameroonian raw materials, lowering costs.

According to Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, the cement plant's spillover impact would be seen not just via cost savings, but also through the creation of new employment possibilities.

He said that the agreement was made possible by President Paul Biya's relentless efforts to develop public-private partnerships in Cameroon.

During the event, the Mayor of Figuil, as well as officials from Cemencam and the Lafarge company, praised the effort to build a new cement and clinker manufacturing facility.
